9 Muslim Passengers Removed From Jet

April 11, 2010

image It’s an old news headline but it is still happening today.  People see a Muslim in dress or even one that looks like a Muslim and calls security in an overly panicked manor.  Is it because we now all think Muslims are all terrorists or is it the fact that Muslims don’t care whether they live or die, especially if the dying involves martyrdom which gets them to a place filled with sexy women?

Below is seen all to often in the media… but the cause? What could the cause of such paranoia be?  Is it due to the actions of 9/11 and all the other terrorist attacks by Islamic militants or just plain propaganda?

Read the below and spill your thoughts…

Officials ordered nine Muslim passengers, including three young children, off an AirTran flight headed to Orlando from Reagan National Airport yesterday afternoon after two other passengers overheard what they thought was a suspicious remark.

Members of the party, all but one of them U.S.-born citizens who were headed to a religious retreat in Florida, were subsequently cleared for travel by FBI agents who characterized the incident as a misunderstanding, an airport official said. But the passengers said AirTran refused to rebook them, and they had to pay for seats on another carrier secured with help from the FBI.

Kashif Irfan, one of the removed passengers, said the incident began about 1 p.m. after his brother, Atif, and his brother’s wife wondered aloud about the safest place to sit on an airplane.

"My brother and his wife were discussing some aspect of airport security," Irfan said. "The only thing my brother said was, ‘Wow, the jets are right next to my window.’ I think they were remarking about safety."

Irfan said he and the others think they were profiled because of their appearance. He said five of the six adults in the party are of South Asian descent, and all six are traditionally Muslim in appearance, with the men wearing beards and the women in headscarves. Irfan, 34, is an anesthesiologist. His brother, 29, is a lawyer. Both live in Alexandria with their families, and both were born in Detroit. They were traveling with their wives, Kashif Irfan’s sister-in-law, a friend and Kashif Irfan’s three sons, ages 7, 4 and 2.

AirTran spokesman Tad Hutcheson agreed that the incident amounted to a misunderstanding. But he defended AirTran’s handling of the incident, which he said strictly followed federal rules. And he denied any wrongdoing on the airline’s part.

"At the end of the day, people got on and made comments they shouldn’t have made on the airplane, and other people heard them," Hutcheson said. "Other people heard them, misconstrued them. It just so happened these people were of Muslim faith and appearance. It escalated, it got out of hand and everyone took precautions."

Hutcheson confirmed that it was ultimately the pilot’s decision to postpone the flight. But he said the pilot was influenced not only by the complaints from passengers but by the actions of two federal air marshals on board, who had learned of the incident and reported it to airport police.

As a result of that report, federal officials made the decision to order all 104 passengers from the plane and re-screen them and their luggage before allowing the flight to take off for Orlando — two hours late and without the nine passengers.

Ellen Howe, a spokeswoman for the Transportation Security Administration, said the pilot acted appropriately.

"For us, it just highlights that security is everybody’s responsibility," Howe said. "Someone heard something that was inappropriate, and then the airline decided to act on it. We certainly support [the pilot's] call to do that."

Howe added that the TSA’s involvement was limited to conducting a security sweep of the plane after the passengers were removed. Airport police officers’ only involvement was to hold the passengers in custody until the FBI arrived, said Tara Hamilton, a spokeswoman for the agency that runs the airport.

Hutcheson said AirTran is not likely to reimburse the passengers for the additional cost of their replacement tickets on USAirways. He said they were given a full refund for their AirTran fares and may fly on the carrier now that the investigation is complete.

The detained passengers said that is not likely.

"It was an ordeal," said Abdur Razack Aziz, the family friend who was also detained. "Nothing came out of it. It was paranoid people. It was very sad."

Did the airline have the right to kick them off the plane? (while still parked at airport)

Does the world run on Propaganda thus spurring on mass ignorance?

April 11, 2010

image It’s a question that often crosses my mind as I read the papers here in the US and back home in South Africa.  First up I am not saying that the US overall is ignorant nor am I stating that it is only the USA that suffers from mass propaganda, by all means, my own home country of South Africa is rife with it much like termites chewing away at the very framework of society.

Muslims are portrayed as terrorists, Jews are portrayed as solely hating the Muslims and money grabbers, White man as racist, Man as sexist and Obama incompetent, but we wont digress into the latter.

Termites the lot of them are, all these embellishments and generalizations kill innocent people, bring about hate crimes of mass proportions and insanity.

If one looks at the true nature of Propaganda and its definition:

“ Propaganda is neutrally defined as a systematic form of purposeful persuasion that attempts to influence the emotions, attitudes, opinions, and actions of specified target audiences for ideological, political or commercial purposes through the controlled transmission of one-sided messages (which may or may not be factual) via mass and direct media channels.”
— Richard Alan Nelson, A Chronology and Glossary of Propaganda in the United States

It leads me to contemplate what in this fine world of ours is true, what is honestly for real and what is the work of those in power.  When we read the news reports regarding Gaza there are two sides of the tale, those placed in the media by the politicians and then those by the actual people suffering at the hands of the other.  Why are the tales so different?

So here is the important question….

Does propaganda breed ignorance or does ignorance in fact breed the availability of propaganda?

Thoughts?

Jews are Scrooges!

April 7, 2010

You don’t want to pay for it, you want it cheaper? Oh you must be a Jew!

Give a finger to a Jew and they’ll take the whole hand!

Charles Dickens describes the true Jew in the likeness of Mr Scrooge!

Jews are rich, they take it from the poor.

On and on it goes without end, stereotyped? ignorance? Are all Jews rich or misers?

Many say that propaganda comes through the ages not only by the media but handed down by generation to generation, perhaps started by media but continued through beliefs ingrained into society.

Images like seen below continue today though perhaps in a more subtle way.  First here are the older versions… What do you think of them?  Don’t hold back, be blunt!

Does Intolerance and Propaganda lead to stereotyping Muslims and Jews?

April 4, 2010

anti-semetic1 Perhaps it is a strange question to ask, for me it is one that intrigues me and bends my mind in mysterious crop circles as to what the answer may be.  Now it could be presumptions for me to state that I doubt whether a large percentage of people have actually thought about what the images, news and tv programs they see everyday do to their views, how they may alter or instill fear inside them.

I have been set out to complete a research paper on the above topic with one of the sections being others views, what others think of images, the above question and the overall misinformation that has spread throughout the world for centuries and beyond.

It may get heated, it may be calm but either way I hope that the discussions that take place will be constructive and perhaps help us all think a little on  the validity of what we see before us as we walk through the day.

Below are two polls to get things started, polls will appear sporadically throughout the posts as a way to gain ground.  The below two however are very mild, if not generic in their format, which won’t last long…  if you’re up to it please place your mark!
